James was the eldest son of James,
4th Duke of Hamilton and Elizabeth Gerard. He vacillated between
the Jacobite and Hanoverian causes, being said to have been made
Knight of the Thistle in 1722 and Knight of the Order of the Garter
in 1723 by the Old Pretender and Knight of the Thistle in 1726 by
He married Lady Anne Cochrane, daughter of Lord
Dundonald, in 1723. The Dundonald chevron and three boars' heads
are seen quartered with the duke's arms on the back of his chair.
Their son succeeded as 6th Duke.
He married Elizabeth Strangeways of Dorset by
whom he had no issue and in 1737 Anne Spenser of Rendlesham, Suffolk.
The second of their three children succeeded as 9th
Duke; the 6th Duke's two sons died
